Work of student directors featured in Ten-Minute Play Fest
04/12/2021 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ashland University Department of Theatre concludes its 2020-2021 season, The Wonder of Human Connection, with a Ten-Minute Play Festival April 16-17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hugo Young Theatre. No tickets are required, but seating is limited and masks are required.
Three plays will be presented directed by students in the directing class. Senior musical theatre major Macy Campbell directs “Bedfellows” by Bruce Kane, while junior musical theatre major Syd Genter directs “Covers” by Sandra Perlman and senior musical theatre major Mia Kardotzke directs “A Flawed Character” by Andrew Biss.
“Bedfellows” is a play about appreciating what you have in life. This play has some lighthearted humor but the characters are still going through difficult life changes. The cast includes sophomores, Sarah Graham (Kettering) as Betty, Katie Snell (Sandusky) as Shelley, and freshman Anthony Marchetta (Brecksville) as Dave.
“Covers” is a play about friendship. Two girls find themselves in a halfway house for pregnant teens. During their first night together as roommates, the girls share their hopes and fears for their and their babies’ futures. The two discuss birth, death and the meaning of life. The cast includes junior Bethany Double (Farmdale) as Tonya and freshman Mattie Vermilya (Findlay) as Paulette.
“A Flawed Character” is about relationships, specifically between a playwright and the character he created. When the playwright experiences writer’s block and the character demands to know who he is, frustration turns to hostility and antagonism and the playwright begins to feel that this relationship wasn’t meant to be. The cast includes senior David Tomlinson (Parma Heights) as the Author and freshman Tobin Grendzynski (North Ridgeville) as the Character.
The production staff includes guest Seth Morrison as technical director and students Tiffany Sims (Grapevine, Texas) and Ashli Lucio (Wylie, Texas) on the crew.
These plays contain adult language and subject matter.
