03/11/2021 ASHLAND, Ohio -- The award winners have been announced for the Ashland University 2021 Juried Student Art and Design Exhibition, which runs through March 30 in the University’s Coburn Gallery.

This exhibition offers $950 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, People’s Choice Award and the AU Permanent Art Collection Award.

The outside juror for the exhibition was Noah Schenk, currently the glass chair and instructor at Mansfield Art Center. Schenk received his BFA with a focus in Glass from Kent State University. While earning his MFA from Ball State University, he began exploring more conceptual artwork, expanding his visual vocabulary from mostly object making to creating installations questioning, observing and processing our current society.

Schenk accepted 76 of the 121 entries submitted.

“2020 will remain in our collective mind for generations.  It is the year that we learned as a planet we can stop and alter our lives in unison. We used the internet to digitally shrink our planet. We’ve expressed ourselves differently in this time. In selecting the artwork for this show I felt your pain, your vulnerability, your humor.  I see lots of talent, artists accessing their creativity, finding their voices,” Schenk said in his juror’s statement. “Art allows us to process feelings, communicate ideas and decompress our thoughts. … You are at a unique point in history as you finish your educations. We have seen the world as we know change. Artists, creators and free thinkers have the chance to reshape our global society. How will you shape our future?”
