Seminary to present “Archaeology Through the Eyes of a Potter” on June 26

ASHLAND, Ohio – “Archaeology Through the Eyes of a Potter,” an interactive lecture and pottery demonstration by Julie Ward, will be held at the Ashland Theological Seminary (910 Center St.) on Sunday, June 26, from 3-4:30 p.m. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Ashland University Department of History and Political Science.

Ward, the owner of Brinker Street Pottery, will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the rich trove of Biblical era ceramic archaeological artifacts housed in the Flora Archaeological Collection at the Ashland Theological Seminary. A modern-day potter with a love for antiquity, Ward will offer insights concerning the craftsman’s techniques and expertise required to fashion and fire the varied ancient ceramic ware. Artifacts range from a child’s tiny cup to 30-liter storage amphorae, dating as early as 4000 B.C. She will also demonstrate the skill required to create one of the ancient vessels, throwing a replica on her wheel.

A native of Ipswich, England, Ward was captivated by working with clay from her earliest memories. She married an American in the Air Force, and following several years of deployment to Germany, they moved to Ohio to raise their family. Her artistic intrigue with creating at the potter’s wheel never wavered and their house includes an art studio, thus Brinker Street Pottery was born.
