AU Peace Scholars accept Catholic commission award on behalf of ACN

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ashland Center for Nonviolence recently received the Michael Berken Peace and Justice Award from the Catholic Commission of Wayne, Ashland & Medina Counties. The award ceremony included a brunch and reception at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Valley City. Tyler Easton, an AU student Peace Scholar and intern for the ACN, accepted the award on behalf of the organization, which was honored for its commitment to encouraging discussions of peace and social wellbeing.

The Michael Berken Peace and Justice Award seeks to honor organizations with an active commitment to social justice in harmony with biblical values and believe in making positive systemic change in the community via organizing, education, and advocacy while exhibiting a spirit of solidarity with the poor and marginalized.

The ACN, which provides programming to both Ashland University and the Ashland community,  promotes alternatives to violence through education, training, and building relationships that foster awareness and consideration of issues related to nonviolence and social justice, and supports ways to create a caring community that is inclusive and just. 

“I think I speak for everyone when I say that the 34th annual Harvest of Justice and Peace was very enjoyable,” said Easton. “The entire occasion was spent outside in the fading beautiful September weather, which was fitting for a group of peacemakers.”
