AU Communication Honor Society inducts new members

04/28/2021 ASHLAND, Ohio -- Lambda Pi Eta has inducted 79 Ashland University students into its Alpha Alpha Rho chapter.

Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities, with more than 500 active chapters.

LPH became a part of the National Communication Association in 1988, and the association's official honor society in July 1995. It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

In order for students to become eligible, they must fulfill complete 60 semester credit hours, have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0, complete the equivalent of 12 semester credit hours in Communication Studies, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for all Communication Studies courses, and be currently enrolled as a student in good standing at their school.

Jalyn Allen, a junior Public Relations major, was one of the students inducted this year. After coming to AU to pursue a social work degree, Allen quickly decided that path wasn’t for her. After taking just one communication class her freshman year, she switched to a major in Public Relations during her first week of classes.

Allen said that the guidance and assistance of her communication professors has been a huge help. “I feel like all of my professors or mentors have always been so open and so eager to help and just do anything possible to help me with anything I’m going through, whether it be in class or personal matters,” she said. “I really appreciate that and I feel like that really has helped me to shape who I am, to help me realize that I would like to be that way with people, too.”

Although Allen didn’t know much about Lambda Pi Eta before she found out she would be inducted, she said she is very thankful for the opportunity, as well as for the professors who helped get here.

“I didn’t know much about it at first, but it just meant a lot to me because I feel like Communication here is just such an amazing department. I’ve truly fallen in love with it and I’ve loved every professor I’ve had, every class I’ve taken and to know that I’ve worked so hard and it’s paying off to get here has been really cool,” she said.

While she still has one more year at AU, Allen is already thinking about her future and what her career path may look like. Recently, she said, she has fallen in love with human resources and anticipates pursuing a career in that field.

“I couldn’t imagine going somewhere else,” Allen said. “I feel like our department is so amazing but I guess overall the opportunities that we get like the projects and the pay-it-forward opportunity was literally amazing and I feel like all of those things have really shaped me and helped me get a lot of hands-on experience now that is going to put me way ahead of other people when I leave.”
