Ashland Center for Nonviolence to Hold Conference on ‘Understanding Our Gun Culture’

1/11/17 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ashland Center for Nonviolence will hold its Third Annual John D. Stratton Conference on March 31 and April 1 and topic of this year’s ACN conference is “Understanding Our Gun Culture.”

The conference will be held on the campus of Ashland University and attendees staying overnight are offered a conference rate through the Holiday Inn Express in Ashland. The keynote speaker for the conference is Dr. Randolph Roth, professor of history and sociology at Ohio State University, who will speak on “Guns Are and Aren’t the Problem: The Relationship between Firearms and Homicide in American History.”

Roth is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Historical Review, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences Roundtable on Crime Trends.

Roth is the author of “American Homicide” (The Belknap Press of the Harvard University Press, 2009), which received the 2011 Michael J. Hindelang Award from American Society of Criminology for the outstanding contribution to criminology over the previous three years, and the 2010 Allan Sharlin Memorial Prize from the Social Science History Association for the outstanding book in social science history. The book is an interregional, internationally comparative study of homicide in the United States from colonial times to the present.

Roth is currently completing “Child Murder in America,” a study of homicides of and by children from colonial times to the present. It will be a companion volume to American Homicide.
