Music Minor
The minor in Music offers students an opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of music while developing their performance skills and knowledge of music theory and history. Through a combination of ensemble participation, applied music lessons, and academic coursework, students engage with diverse musical traditions and styles, fostering creativity, expression, and artistic growth.
Curriculum
Students begin by participating in either University Band (MUSIC 010) or University Choir (MUSIC 022), providing opportunities for ensemble performance and musical collaboration. I lieu of band or choir participation, students can complete applied music lessons and courses in music history, gaining insights into the evolution of musical styles, genres, and cultural contexts.
For the music theory and skills component of the minor, students choose from a selection of courses covering topics such as class piano, aural skills, and music theory, providing a foundation in music literacy and proficiency.
Finally, students complete 5 credit hours of music electives, allowing for further exploration of areas such as music composition, conducting, world music, or specialized performance ensembles.
With a total of 18 credit hours required for completion, the minor in Music provides students with a well-rounded musical education, fostering artistic expression, critical listening skills, and a deeper understanding of the role of music in society.

Applied Music Minor
The minor in Applied Music provides students with a focused study in instrumental or vocal performance, allowing for the development of advanced skills and techniques on their chosen instrument or voice. Through participation in ensemble performance, applied music lessons, and academic coursework, students engage in rigorous musical training and gain practical experience in performance and musicianship.
Curriculum
Students begin by participating in either University Band (MUSIC 010) or University Choir (MUSIC 022), providing opportunities for ensemble performance and musical collaboration. Students can also enroll in Principal Applied (MUSIC 14X) or Class Piano Courses to receive individual instruction on their chosen instrument or voice, further developing their musical proficiency and repertoire.
To deepen their knowledge of music history, students can take courses such as Music History I (MUSIC 320), Music History II (MUSIC 321), or Music History Seminar (MUSIC 381), exploring the historical context and cultural significance of various musical styles and traditions.
Finally, students complete 3 credit hours of music electives, allowing for further specialization in areas such as composition, conducting, chamber music, or advanced performance studies.
With a total of 18 credit hours required for completion, the minor in Applied Music provides students with a comprehensive musical education, preparing them for careers as performers, educators, or scholars in the field of music.
