International Student Services exists to guide international students at Ashland University as they navigate life in the United States. ISS provides information on available housing, local transportation, academic success and academic immigration. The professionals at ISS also give advice on working legally in the country, living peacefully with roommates and dealing with homesickness. In all that we do, we aim to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to every individual.
As a part of the Center for CommUNITY and Belonging, International Student Services aims to promote relationships between people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds for the purpose of greater understanding of and compassion for other ways of living and working. ISS hopes to assist all students in learning about diverse worldviews to better equip themselves for future service.
International Programs
International Club
The club consists of a team of international student workers who prepare activities open to the entire campus to promote a vibrant social life and a support system for international students.
Word Café
Hosted by the International Club
The campus community is welcomed to hear about how international students live in their home countries. Often, traditional foods can be shared at these events, and questions are always welcome.
Ambassador Program
American and international students can volunteer to be paired up for a period of one semester for the purpose of cultural and language exchange.
Friendship Families
Vetted families from the community can volunteer to "adopt" an international student or group of students to provide friendship and support.
International Spectacular
Once per year, the ISS office in cooperation with the International Club presents a day of sessions given by international students on topics related to their own countries. Students also present performances, such as songs, dances, and dramas. The event is open to the campus community and the public.
Conversation Connections
Members of the campus and local community are welcome to join for an hour of small group conversation centered on student-submitted questions.
As a part of Community and Belonging, ISS hopes to assist students in examining their own worldviews so that they can recognize their true identities and purposes. Through intercultural activities and sessions, students will have the opportunity to do the following:
- Communicate with people from other cultures (exposure)
- Understand the reasons behind opinions and actions from differing backgrounds (worldview)
- Offer friendship to people from varying backgrounds (service)
- Reflect on one's own personal values and practices (self-improvement)
